President's Heartbeat - w/c 28th August

In recent weeks, I have glimpsed the future of Yeovil. I predict that over the next decade or so, Yeovil will develop into a regional hub for high-tech, aerospace, cutting-edge and science-based industry. Out of Leonardo Helicopters, companies comprising people who outgrew their Leonardo roots have set up their own, flourishing, sector-related businesses. Aerosystems on Bluebell Road is conspicuous evidence of this sector; then there is Yeovil Innovation Centre, home to other cutting-edge companies such as Invirt Reality and IEP. To continue the momentum, build work commences early in 2018 for iAero, a rotary-wing aerospace facility on the edge of Westland airfield, representing an investment of £11m into the local economy by Somerset County Council. To encourage the development of this sector and Yeovil’s industrial future, Yeovil Chamber is co-hosting their inaugural Business Fair at Westland Leisure Centre on 18th October. In the run-up to this Fair, I will be contacting local businesses, in particular, the high-tech sector, to encourage them to take part. The Business Fair is planned as an annual event to showcase trade & industry in Yeovil. Collaboration and supply-chain interest in the Fair has already come in from Science Vale in Oxfordshire, which is home to space-rocket engines and driverless cars.
