WRAP Business Recycling Support Pilot briefing

WRAP Business Recycling Support Pilot briefing

Released On 29th Dec 2022

WRAP is developing a suite of tools to increase business waste recycling. The focus is on non-household Municipal waste, i.e., that with a composition similar to household waste and usually originating from businesses like offices, retail, hospitality. They were seeking potential partners to pilot the tools and different approaches. The project links closely to the future Somerset Green Business Support project and also the ambitions to improve business recycling through the Somerset Climate Strategy. SCC and SWP put in an Expression of Interest and were chosen to be one of the 5 pilot partners, out of a total of 28 EOIs.

Aim of the pilots:

• Increase business recycling rates

• Provide information on actual costs (businesses perceive that costs will be higher)

• Help reduce waste costs for businesses

The pilots will test a suite of tools developed by WRAP including:

• Business Support Hub – a dedicated website featuring tools, indicative cost calculator, guidance (recycling, procurement, storage guidance) and case studies.

• Communications – national, regional and local campaigns (Recycle Now branded for recognition)

• Direct advisory support – either 121 support or webinars and workshops.

The pilots aim to test a variety of approaches in different areas and compare the success rate of areas using 121 support and the tools with those making use of the tools only.

The pilots are due to take place in the final quarter of 2022/23, commencing after the Christmas period.

SCC/SWP Pilot

Builds on existing work that has been done around the county. Research by Chard Town Council identified that many businesses were unaware of their legal obligations with regards to waste, and that many were using household services or otherwise inappropriately disposing of waste. As we have this piece of work as a baseline, this area would be suitable to test the 121 support along with the tool and communications materials. To ensure reaching a reasonable number and variety of businesses, the areas to receive 121 support will include Chard, Ilminster and Langport. In addition to this, we will make use of the existing business and communications channels to engage with businesses all around Somerset, highlighting the tools available and directing to the hub. SCC will need to seek and appoint a Business Support Advisor (BSA) for the pilot period covering December to March. WRAP - The Climate Crisis: Act Now
