Why is Trust so important in coaching?
As part of my counselling training is understanding why building that trust with the client is so important and this is no different when it comes to coaching, mentoring or being that accountability partner. Trust forms the bases of everything we talk through that they feel they can open up in a safe space and that they trust I am not going to talk to others about what has been said in the room.
All of the conversations I am apart of with my clients has to be confidential but this is built on them trusting me in the process. For some clients they may have been hit with lack of trust in the past with their managers or peers, so to ensure the sessions are successful I need to provide that confidence to them, that this is a safe space and I won’t talk to anyone about what has been said.
Sometimes the client has come through friends of mine but it is important that anything said in the room stays in that room. It is their journey not for anyone else to be involved in our conversations or their thoughts and feelings.
Having trust in someone is so important whatever you may be doing whether you are looking to change roles, stepping back to part time or even retirement or even start something completely new. I have been let down and lost that trust of someone before so I know how it feels when this happens.
This learning has made me understand and want others to trust me in their situation as I know how important it is for anyone wanting to move forward.
It can be scary, it can be nerve wreaking but having the comfort and knowledge that someone will not share your thoughts and feelings is so important.
Sometimes I like it to feel like a nice hot cup of coffee where you feel all wrapped up in warmth from holding the cup to taking a sip.
What does trust mean to you?
How do you build that trust with clients or someone you work with?
