Tributes have been paid to long-serving councillor Alan Smith who has passed away following a period of illness.

Cllr Smith, who was 74, served on South Somerset District Council representing the Yeovil South Ward from 2003 to 2011, Yeovil West from 2015 to 2019, and the Brympton Ward from 2019.

He had also been a Yeovil Town Councillor and Crewkerne Town Councillor during this time. He was also a school governor and had represented many resident groups within his ward.

South Somerset District Council chairman Cllr Paul Maxwell said: "It was with very great sadness that I learned of the death of Councillor Alan Smith, who passed away on Wednesday 6 April.

“I knew him as a friend and colleague for more than 12 years. He was a kind, thoughtful and decent man with a great sense of humour. In more recent times, I think he would have been the first to admit that Zoom meetings were not always his forte though his willingness to persevere absolutely demonstrated his enduring commitment to serving his constituents.

“I am sure that everyone at SSDC and all those who knew him will miss him deeply, but also remember him with great fondness.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with his widow, Claire, at this very sad time."
