Summer Holidays
Released On 26th Jul 2022
Whether you have children or not the end of July and all of August tends to be a quiet time on the work front (Except for those uniform shops).
It is almost like we have 2 starts to the year. January and then September.
I always use the time in different ways depending on what is happening in my business and personal commitments. It has taken me several years to be ok with it being a quieter time and embracing the opportunity to have some time out without feeling guilty.
I don't feel the two starts to the year will ever change and in a way we all need to embrace it. But that is all ok if you feel ok with the quiet time and you want to get on with those jobs that tend to be pushed to the side. But someone like myself who loves the buzz of being busy it has taken some time to learn that it is ok to have those quiet times. I know that at Christmas I appreciate it more easily as it is great to have some time seeing family and friends, but the summer holidays just feel different.
If you ever feel a little uneasy during this time especially if you are running your own business or if you are in an organisation where you feel everyone around you is off on holiday. You are not alone, and it is ok to feel uneasy but if there is 1 step to embracing it rather than trying to fight it the better you will feel.
I have put below some pointers that I follow depending on where things are with my business.
- Take a step back in the knowledge that demand is that bit quieter and so you feel it is a good excuse to slow down and get that energy ready for September.
- Get some of those jobs done that you were putting off as you normally busy doing the work and attending meetings with the knowledge the distractions won’t be there.
- Learn something new or catch up on that reading which you know will be useful, but you can feel a little guilt free as everyone else on holiday.
- Have a holiday and switch off those emails.
