Local author will charm guests at Yeovil Library

Somerset author, Caroline Newark will be giving a talk, “A Murder in the West Country – Love and Loss in the War of the Roses”, at Yeovil Library this Thursday (22 September).
The event will take place at the King George Street library from 10.30 until 11.30 am and will focus on Caroline’s latest book: “Fire and Fleet and Candlelight.”
Caroline’s talk will begin with an explanation of a notorious murder which occurred during the early stages of the fifteenth century Wars of the Roses.
The author will explain why it happened and how the blood-feuds between those vying for power in the West Country mirrored what was happening elsewhere in England.
The audience will meet the individual families involved, their links to those in powerful positions at Court, the terrible human cost of the conflict and how it impacted particularly on the women.
Councillor Federica Smith-Roberts, Somerset County Council Lead Member for Communities, said: “What a fabulous interactive event held in our library. I hope that many can attend to see this book discussed in greater detail.”
Caroline Newark qualified as a teacher and after a career in teaching, took a law degree at Southampton University. She taught science and sewing in Ghana and law at Aberystwyth University, opened a nursery school in Southampton and, together with her husband, milked Jersey cows in West Wales.
Retirement heralded a change of direction, and she began writing books about the lives of the women in her mother’s family tree, – The Family Tree Saga – twenty-one women meant twenty-one books to be written; the mothers, the daughters and the daughters-in-law, all with husbands, families and stories to tell.
Her first book “The Pearl of France” is about Marguerite of France who, in 1299, married Edward I as his second wife. The last book will be about her mother, Kathleen Bainbridge who married her father, Francis Newark, in 1934.

"Some of the stories will break your heart, others will make you smile. Many of these women faced unimaginable hardship, danger and loss – while others schemed and plotted to get what they wanted. There were forced marriages and torrid love affairs, women who were betrayed by their husbands and others with long and happy marriages."
