Her Majesty The Queen, Elizabeth II 1926 - 2022
Released On 9th Sep 2022
In a statement on Thursday 8 September, Buckingham Palace has said: "The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon.
"The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow."
Chairman of South Somerset District Council Cllr Paul Maxwell said: “It was with deep and profound sadness that I learned of the death of Her Majesty The Queen.
“She was an inspiration and an example to us all. She embodied and personified all the very best qualities, of honesty, decency, integrity, humility and a tireless devotion to public service.
“She touched, not only the lives of countless people in our own country, but many millions across the world. She was deeply and widely respected by world leaders of all political and religious persuasions. She was able to bring people together by her considerable compassion and understanding.
“In an ever-changing world, she was stability, certainty and reassurance. She gave us all hope.
“Difficult, almost impossible to replace and hard to believe she is not with us anymore, she is a very hard act to follow.
“She was a mother, grandmother and great grandmother and her family will miss her enormously. All of us will miss her and will also remember her as one of the greatest leaders of all time.
“Our thoughts are with her family and our future King, and that he may be able to guide us all, here in South Somerset, our nation as a whole, the Commonwealth and the wider global community in the befitting and respectful way that she did. Long live the King.”
Annie Maw, Lord-Lieutenant of Somerset, said: “Today we have lost one of the greatest people of our age. On behalf of the people of Somerset, I would like to offer my most sincere sympathy to her family who, we must remember, have lost a beloved, mother, grandmother and great grandmother.
“As a nation, we too, have lost a person without whom life will never be the same. We must now repay her trust by acting with the dignity and respect which she would have expected and which she deserves. During her long life she has set us an exemplary example of devoted service to us all within the Commonwealth. Against so many odds, her message has always been one of peace, unity and partnership.
“We have been immeasurably privileged to have her as our Queen and Sovereign for so many years. We now wish to welcome and support her son, Charles, as our King.
“From the people of Somerset, Long Live the King.”
