Discover Somerset and support the local economy this summer

Released On 27th Jul 2022

Make the most of Somerset and Exmoor this summer and give our local economy a much-needed boost – that’s the message from Somerset County Council in partnership with Visit Somerset and Visit Exmoor.

Somerset is a large and varied county with many exciting things to do along the coast and beautiful countryside inland – fun family days out, hidden gems to discover, quirky shops to explore and well-known landmarks to visit.

With fuel prices at an all-time high, you can save money by choosing from the many amazing places and attractions on your doorstep, instead of driving further afield.

Staying, buying or eating locally strengthens the local economy which can then help support all our communities. There are also environmental benefits to consider as local businesses are generally easier to get to for residents, reducing travel time.

Councillor Val Keitch, Somerset County Council’s Lead Member for Local Government Reorganisation and Prosperity, said: “Somerset is the best place to be in summer with so much to offer in all corners of our county.

“With schools breaking up for the summer holidays, I’m sure there will be many parents looking for ways to keep their children entertained over the break. There will also be lots of people wanting to make the most of summer after the restrictions of the last few years.

“There’s so much to explore and I would encourage everyone to support the local economy by enjoying some of the many attractions, restaurants, activities and much more on offer in our wonderful county."

John Turner from Visit Somerset explained: “When you think of Somerset, so many amazing things come to mind. This summer we’re asking residents to help give our local economy a boost by staying closer to home and enjoying what’s on offer in Somerset – there’s so much to choose from.

We’re excited to be working with Visit Exmoor and Somerset County Council to show off all there is to do and see this summer, and year-round as well.”

Emma Thomasson, Chief Executive at Visit Exmoor said: “Summer is a fantastic time to visit Exmoor. It’s such a unique and special place and there’s something for everyone with fun and beautiful things to see, do and try!

“We are so lucky to have this special place on our doorstep and this is a brilliant way to support the local economy after a difficult two years – what better way to show your support than to enjoy everything that Exmoor has to offer?”
