On the 24th of July, AmicusLaw’s asbestos specialist Helen Grady’s recent asbestos case was featured in a report by popular morning show, Morning Live. The show told the tragic story of the late Susan Stephens, a beloved teacher who was exposed to asbestos during her time working in schools between 1990 and 2006.
The case was incredibly complex, with Helen facing significant challenges in the form of denials of liability from the local Buckinghamshire County Council. The team went the extra mile to fight for justice, reaching out to a multitude of other teachers and staff who worked alongside Susan, allowing them to gather invaluable recollections and information, despite these teachers now living all over the country. Additionally, complex legal engineering evidence was obtained and later challenged by the defence legal team.
The case, which was built solely around Susan’s exposure during a time when asbestos dangers were widely known to the school, was ultimately settled on a full liability basis in a joint settlement meeting between the parties, just before the scheduled trial.
